Cratzbarg took a meandering path from his beginnings as a Brockville elementary school teacher and, later, a motivational speaker. The difference between Cratzbarg and the notoriously acerbic Mr. Blackwell is the bite. Cratzbarg relishes making older women feel young without dressing like their daughters or granddaughters. His favourite word is “Fabulous!” with the exclamation mark. Fashion guru Sid Cratzbarg, owner of Accessories by Sid, delivers the latest in fashion advice as a regular guest on CBC and CTV Live in Ottawa. Sid’s unique personality will keep you smiling along with his budget conscious fashion advice. Sid has a flair for fragrance and consults at Canada’s top high end Department store Holt Renfrew working with the Versace, Ferragamo and Burberry fragrances for men and women.

Born: May 24, 1967

Hip-hop’s original overweight lover, Heavy D parlayed an eminently likable persona and strong MC skills into a surprisingly lengthy career, in tandem with his backing group the Boyz. Weighing in at over 250 pounds, his girth could easily have become a one-note premise, but he varied his lyrical concerns to include positive message tracks and fun-loving party jams, and exuded a genuine warmth and respect for women without getting too graphic or sentimental. Musically, his appeal was just as broad — he was able to mix elements of R&B, reggae, dance, and pop into his music, but his raps were quick-tongued enough that he avoided the accusations of selling out that dogged many other crossover successes of his era. Moreover, he was an all-around talent — an agile dancer, a naturalistic actor, and an astute businessman who eventually became a label executive. Even after his tenure as a pop hitmaker had effectively ended, he maintained a solid, steady level of popularity all the way through the ’90s, and his albums kept on going gold.

Heavy D was born Dwight Errington Myers in Jamaica in 1967 and moved with his family to Mt. Vernon, NY, as a young child. He discovered rap music at age eight and by junior high was making his own demo tapes. He later formed the Boyz with high-school friends DJ Eddie F (born Eddie Ferrell), Trouble T-Roy (born Troy Dixon), and G-Wiz (born Glen Parrish). Their demo tape found its way to Def Jam executive Andre Harrell, who was in the process of forming his own label, Uptown. Harrell made Heavy D & the Boyz the first artists signed to Uptown in 1986, and they released their debut album, Living Large, in 1987. The singles “Mr. Big Stuff” and “The Overweight Lover’s in the House” established Heavy D’s image among rap fans, and “Don’t You Know” was a crossover hit on the R&B charts, narrowly missing the Top Ten. All told, Living Large was a gold-selling hit.

The follow-up album, 1989′s Big Tyme, was the group’s real breakthrough, however. Like its predecessor, it featured production from both Marley Marl and new jack swing guru Teddy Riley. By this time, though, there was a bit more depth to Heavy D’s persona, and he was also hitting a peak of consistency as a songwriter. “Somebody for Me,” “We Got Our Own Thang,” and “Gyrlz, They Love Me” were all significant R&B hits, with the former two reaching the Top Ten; plus, “We Got Our Own Thang” attracted some attention from MTV. Big Tyme went all the way to number one on the R&B album charts and made the Top 20 on the pop side; it was also certified platinum. Unfortunately, tragedy struck on the supporting tour: Trouble T-Roy was killed in an accident on July 15, 1990. He became the subject of Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth’s elegiac hit “They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)” as well as a tribute cut on the next Heavy D & the Boyz album, 1991′s Peaceful Journey.

Peaceful Journey was another platinum-selling hit, thanks to the single “Now That We Found Love,” which made Heavy D a full-fledged mainstream success; it reached the R&B Top Five and just missed the pop Top Ten. “Is It Good to You” and the posse cut “Don’t Curse” were also popular with hip-hop fans, and he was also a weekly television presence via his theme song for the sketch comedy series In Living Color. 1992′s Blue Funk was a tougher effort that broke somewhat with Heavy D’s well-established image, and perhaps as a result it suffered from underexposure; nonetheless, it managed to go gold, and the singles “Truthful” and “Who’s the Man?” scored with rap audiences. In the meantime, Heavy D had been working on establishing a concurrent acting career and landed his biggest role yet as a recurring supporting character on the Fox sitcom Roc in 1993; around the same time, he became the vice president of A&R at Uptown. Over the next few years, he would also appear as a recurring character on another Fox sitcom, Living Single.

Heavy D & the Boyz returned to platinum status with 1994′s Nuttin’ but Love, which spawned hits in “Black Coffee,” the R&B Top Five “Got Me Waiting,” and the title track; it also became their second album to top the R&B charts. 1996 was a big non-musical year for Heavy D; he briefly served as president of Uptown Records and made his off-Broadway theatrical debut starring in the one-act play +Riff Raff, which was written and directed by Laurence Fishburne. In 1997, he returned to music as a solo act, releasing Waterbed Hev to surprising commercial response; it made the Top Ten on both the pop and R&B charts and produced a Top Five R&B hit in “Big Daddy.” His seventh album, 1999′s Heavy, became his seventh straight to reach the R&B Top Ten. In the meantime, he appeared in the 1999 Eddie Murphy/Martin Lawrence comedy Life and landed a prominent supporting role in the Oscar-nominated drama The Cider House Rules. In 2000, he landed a recurring role as a counselor on the Fox high-school drama Boston Public, which lasted for the next several years. Steve Huey, Rovi

On November 14, 1975, Canadian radio history was made. When the strains of Joni Mitchell’s “You Turn Me On, I’m a Radio” transmitted over the airwaves at 93.1 FM, CKCU became the first campus-based community radio station in the country.

In the ensuing 35 years, CKCU has continued to be a pioneer in community broadcasting, carrying out our mandate of providing an alternative to commercial radio and the CBC as a voice for the many Ottawa communities not served by the mainstream media.

CKCU is licensed by the CRTC as a community-based campus radio station. This is a uniquely Canadian model which means that we are an integral part of the Carleton University community, but also serve many other groups within our broadcast range.

CKCU is a Registered Charity funded by Donors like you, the students of Carleton University and members of the community, and by Program Sponsorships. In 1978, CKCU held its first annual Funding Drive, asking listeners to support community radio. Since then, Ottawans have pledged more than $1 million and helped make CKCU the largest listener-supported radio station in Ottawa-Carleton.

THE HISTORY OF HALLOWEEN

Halloween is known and loved today as a time to wear costumes, go door to door asking for candy, and watch monster movies. But the holiday’s origins go back centuries to the enactment of All Saints’ day, a Christian holiday. Along the way, it has also picked up traditions from Samhain, a Celtic festival celebrating the start of winter.

All Saints’ Day

The name “Halloween” began as “All Hallows Eve.” This became “All Hallow E’en,” leading to “Hallowe’en,” or Halloween. It was the evening before All Hallows Day, which was later called All Saints’ Day. (In this case, “hallows” meant “saints.”)

All Saints’ Day, a feast for all martyrs and saints, was celebrated on November 1st for the first time during the 8th century, but customs varied regarding its observance. This date was officially established for all Catholic churches in 837 by Pope Gregory IV.

Starting in the 10th century, this feast was the eve of All Souls’ Day, which soon came to overshadow it.

All Souls’ Day

Taking place on November 2, All Souls’ Day was a day of prayer for the dead. It was believed that the prayers of those still living could comfort dead souls, or elevate them from Purgatory. The observances began the previous evening with prayers and the ringing of church bells.

When England moved from Catholicism to Protestantism, the All Souls’ Day bell-ringing was prohibited and no official services were conducted. Individuals and groups continued to find ways of observing the day, perhaps out of a feeling of obligation to their dead loved ones; reports dating to the 16th century refer to people praying in the fields by the light of torches or bonfires.

Another observance involved “soul cakes.” These (and alms) were given to the poor, in return for which the poor would offer a prayer for the dead. The poor and their children in some areas would go “souling,” going to the homes of the wealthy and asking for soul cakes, fruit, and alms, a practice mentioned by Shakespears in The Two Gentlemen of Verona. (“You have learned… to speak puling [whiningly], like a beggar at Hallowmas.”)

The modern observances of Halloween are more recent than one might expect. The holiday had a rebirth in North America between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, probably through an influx of Irish immigrants. They brought with them traditions that combined features of the Celtic and Christian holidays, and celebrated with feasting, divinations, and mischief making.

Jack-o-lanterns and trick-or-treating in costume both became Halloween fixtures in North America, and have since been exported back to Europe.

There has been a backlash against Halloween by several groups in recent years. Some Christians object to its allegedly pagan origins, or to what they see as its celebration of witches and other “evil powers.” Some neo-pagans object to the alleged Christian takeover of their holiday, or to what they see as a distorted, negative view of witches and magic. And some simply don’t think it’s safe for children to go out after dark taking candy from strangers. (The last of those groups often proposes safer celebrations.)

Still, as long as there are cold autumn nights, a steady supply of candy corn, and radio stations to play “The Monster Mash,” there seems no danger of Halloween going away.

SUPERHEAVY

SuperHeavy is a rock supergroup consisting of Mick Jagger, Joss Stone, Dave Stewart, Damian Marley, and A. R. Rahman. Stone and Stewart had collaborated in the past with Jagger. The band’s formation was announced on 20 May 2011. Jagger said of the band, “We wanted a convergence of different musical styles… We were always overlapping styles, but they were nevertheless separate”. Jagger wanted SuperHeavy to showcase different musical styles, with music ranging from reggae to ballads to Indian genre.

Early years

Formation of rock supergroup “SuperHeavy” was secret until May 2011. On 20 May 2011, English musician and the lead vocalist of rock band The Rolling Stones Mick Jagger announced the formation of new supergroup named, “Super Heavy”, which also includes Dave Stewart, Joss Stone, Damian Marley, and A. R. Rahman. Super Heavy was Dave Stewart’s idea. Inspired by the sounds washing into his home in St Ann’s Bay, Jamaica, Stewart urged Mick Jagger to make a fusion, along with Indian orchestras. Stewart and Mick had mutual liking for Indian orchestrations and in a lookout for different voices, A. R. Rahman was added to the supergroup.

In early 2009, Mick Jagger, A. R. Rahman, Dave Stewart, Joss Stone and Damian Marley experimented at a Jim Henson Studios in Los Angeles, trying to “write songs which had meaning”, during which they recorded 29 songs in 10 days.

Debut album (2009-2011)

The group began the works of their self-titled debut album in early 2009 when Jagger, Stewart, Stone, Marley and Rahman experimented at a studio in Los Angeles, trying to “write songs which had meaning”. They recorded about 35 hours of music with some songs originally lasting “an hour and 10 minutes” before they were whittled down. The album was previewed at Jim Henson Studios, Los Angeles, on 30 June 2011. The band played eight of the recorded songs at the event. Their debut single, “Miracle Worker”, released on 6 July received mostly positive reviews. Mick Jagger sings in sanskrit on “Satyameva Jayate” (Truth alone triumphs), the second single released on 9 August, 2011. Composed by Rahman, the song also features Dave Stewart, Joss Stone and Damian Marley.
